On Monday, Google unveiled a $10 million donation to several organizations that promote mental health among adolescents in the United States, including the Rare Impact Fund, an initiative led by singer and actress Selena Gomez.

Gomez, in a statement posted on Google's blog, expressed how challenging and lonely adolescence can be, recalling her own struggle to understand her emotions in her youth. She noted that once she received the support she needed, she understood that she was not alone, and that information is essential in mental health issues. She stressed the importance of providing adolescents with resources that enable them to develop healthy habits in this area, and explained that the goal of the Rare Impact Fund is to expand access to mental health services, especially in school settings.

The singer also expressed her enthusiasm for collaborating with Google in this joint effort, stating that she and her team are committed to achieving this goal.

Google's contribution will be crucial to implement mental health training programs and resources that will benefit one million high school students and 10,000 teachers.

During the event launching this initiative, held at a high school in Los Angeles, California, Gomez made a surprise appearance and highlighted the importance of not letting young people feel alone in their mental health challenges. “No one should feel isolated in their mental health experiences, especially young people, who can be especially vulnerable to those struggles,” Gomez said.

In addition to the Rare Impact Fund, Google will also provide support to other organizations such as DonorsChoose, The JED Foundation, Child Mind Institute and The Steve Fund, bringing its overall commitment to $25 million to promote digital wellness and online safety among young people.

In a first phase, Google.org has funded all current mental health projects for high school teachers on DonorsChoose, offering up to $500 for new projects and a $200 credit for teachers who complete one of nine new mental health training courses developed with subject matter experts.
