Velázquez is singled out by the United States as "significantly corrupt".

"The truth is that I said I was going to resign to defend myself as an ordinary citizen. At this moment, I have official confirmation that there is no investigation against me in the Public Prosecutor's Office. And informally that there is no investigation in the United States either. I have the information that the Public Prosecutor's Office is going to ask the embassy for the elements that they say they have about the crime through which they are accusing me", indicated Velázquez in dialogue with the Paraguayan media ABC.

And he added: "I was afraid of an investigation set-up that, thank God, did not appear, it did not happen. So, at least I have to know where I am going to defend myself and what is against me".

He then explained that he would resign when he can access the U.S. complaint.

"I maintain that once I have access to the complaint made by the ambassador, I ratify that I will resign and go out to defend myself as an ordinary citizen"; at the same time he stressed that he will resign "at the moment that the concrete complaint appears" against him.

It should be recalled that the United States designated the official for his participation in significant acts of corruption. He is accused of having received bribes of more than one million dollars from a public official.

The announcement was made by Marc Ostfield, U.S. Ambassador in Asuncion, in a press conference at the diplomatic delegation, and at the same time, Antony Blinken, Secretary of State issued a statement in Washington.

This accusation by the U.S. government also affects Juan Carlos Duarte, former prosecutor and personal friend of the vice-president.

Secretary Blinken "has received credible information of the participation of Velázquez and Duarte in significant corruption".

The U.S. indictment against the vice-president and the former prosecutor implies the non-entry to the country, as well as their family members. The measure reaches Lourdes María Andrea Samaniego González, Dionicio Adalberto Velázquez Giménez, Sonya Rebeca Velázquez Escauriza, Hugo José Velázquez Escauriza, Ninfa Concepción Vera Moreira and Tamara Duarte Martínez.
