Fort Mifflin around 1771 was considered the largest British port and dockyard in North America. Locals then protested against British economic policies and imports. In response to these complaints, Philadelphia Governor John Penn asked General Thomas Gage to create defenses for the city. Fort Mifflin is the oldest fortification continually used in the United States.

Almost 350 Americans died in November 1777 when British forces relentlessly bombed the place from ships. But the Americans’ bravery at Fort Mifflin gave George Washington time to regroup at Valley Forge.
