Becky G, an American with Mexican roots, will perform this Sunday in Inglewood, a place at the center of the world that day because it plays host to the Super Bowl. For the artist, born in that town, it will be a unique opportunity to perform in “my "house" for fans from all over the planet.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Becky G felt enthusiastic.

"I am very, very proud to be an Inglewood girl and I will always say so," she said. 

She feels "very happy" to perform in the final game of the National Football League championship, which will be played at the recently-opened SoFi Stadium.

The performance comes in addition to announcing she will release her first song in collaboration with Karol G. This year, she will also release a new album, and the singer will be part of the group of artists to entertain fans at halftime.

"I'm dying for the day to come. I know it is going to be an unforgettable experience,” she said.

The teams competing for the Lombardi, the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals, will meet in a stadium located next to the hospital where Becky G was born. Her grandfather, born in Mexico, was buried in the local cemetery, also located near the sports complex.

Despite being born in the U.S., Becky G claims a double identity:

“I feel American and Mexican. Both things, this is how we live day to day as the children and grandchildren of immigrants," she said.

She is a young singer, but with an extensive musical career, and is currently one of the most recognized artists on the Latino music scene. That is something she uses to promote causes she considers fair and just. 

"I feel that people who have a big loudspeaker have to use it to amplify the voices of those who need to be heard," she said in the Los Angeles Times interview.

She is a defender of causes such as mental health, gender equality, anti-racism or the defense of immigrant rights.

“It would be irresponsible not to share with those who listen to me the stories of the most unprotected, and help create a better world. It is my mission as an artist and a human being,” Becky G asserted.

As a child she did not understand Spanish, but today she commands it perfectly. She believes that many artists of Latino origin in the U.S. avoid using the language of their parents and grandparents because they make mistakes and “we don't want to look bad or be made fun of. But you have to be brave and practice, which is the only way to improve.”

Since the release of her latest album, Mala Santa in 2019, her fans are waiting to know when she will release new music. She has been working on a new album for months, and has already said it will be not just in English.

“I have reached a point where the language flows, now I even dream in both languages. I don't see the difference anymore,” she said.

In a city like Los Angeles, with 48% of its population of Latino origin, Becky G feels honored to represent them at the Super Bowl.
