At the Julio Mario Santo Domingo Theater in Bogota, Colombia, the District Mayor's Office paid tribute to the folk singer. 

Through an official statement, Totó's family informed that "the fact that has determined this decision is that Totó has for some time presented neuro-cognitive difficulties that prevent her from continuing to perform on stage, as she did uninterruptedly for six decades, rescuing, renewing and spreading the traditional music of Colombia in the five continents".

"At this time Totó's management team and family are ensuring that she receives the care she needs and can enjoy a quality of life that maintains her joy and connection to music and dance. We will make further announcements as we develop ideas to support Totó and celebrate her incredible career, some of which her fans and colleagues will be able to participate in if they wish," the statement concluded.

Totó is known internationally for recordings such as "La Colombie", "La Candela Viva", "Carmelina", "Pacantó", "La Bodega", "El asunto" Tambolero", "Oye Manita".

In 2013, the artist received a Latin Grammy award for her career in music. Another of her most memorable performances was in 1982 when she accompanied Gabriel García Marquez to the Nobel Prize for Literature award ceremony.

Talita, one of the artist's granddaughters, told Radio Nacional de Colombia that "it is an honor to have her as a representative of folklore, she is an impressive singer who has filled many hearts, Colombia loves her very much and we are very proud and grateful".

To close her legacy with a flourish, the Real World label, to which Totó belongs, will release two new songs, the royalties from which will go to support the artist.
