Researchers discovered a compound called O-methylflavone in African wormwood, which has been found to kill the bacteria responsible for tuberculosis, both in its active and dormant states. This is crucial because the dormant state of TB bacteria is typically resistant to antibiotics, making the infection difficult to treat effectively.

While this compound alone is not potent enough for direct use as a treatment, it offers a foundation for developing stronger and more effective drugs. The plant itself has long been used for treating respiratory issues, coughs, and fevers, indicating its broad therapeutic potential. Scientists are continuing to explore the plant’s chemical properties to isolate additional molecules that may contribute to fighting TB.

Although current TB treatments exist, the process is lengthy and can be especially challenging for drug-resistant strains. This discovery could lead to the development of new therapies that are more effective and faster in treating TB, particularly in areas like Africa where the disease burden is high​
