In 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) has raised alarms regarding a significant increase in dengue cases globally. Recent data indicates that over 7.6 million dengue cases were reported between January and April this year, already surpassing the 6.6 million cases registered throughout 2023. This surge has been particularly notable in the Americas, where by epidemiological week 37, the total number of cases had reached 11.7 million, representing a 221% increase compared to the same period in 2023

Climate change, with phenomena like El Niño and La Niña, has created favorable conditions for the reproduction of dengue-transmitting mosquitoes, amplifying outbreaks in various regions. The WHO also highlighted that many countries' health systems are unprepared to handle this rise, especially in those facing humanitarian crises or political instability​

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has urged countries to strengthen surveillance, early diagnosis, and treatment efforts to prevent severe cases and deaths. Additionally, it has called on South American countries to review their dengue response plans, as an increase in transmission is expected in the coming months​

This alarming rise in cases highlights the urgent need to improve prevention and control systems, such as awareness campaigns about mosquito management and the necessity of robust health infrastructure to mitigate the disease's public health impact globally.
