Councilman Kevin de Leon led the renaming of the street that is located next to Mariachi Plaza in the Boyle Heights neighborhood, an area known for its Latino culture in LA.

The former Bailey Street is now called Vicente Fernandez in honor of the Mexican music icon, who passed away last December. 

Through a tweet, the councilman invited all mariachi fans to join the honorary act:

"Today is the day! Join us at 5PM at Mariachi Plaza for the official renaming of Bailey Street to Vicente Fernández Street alongside his wife Doña Cuquita!" wrote De León.

Following the approval of the change, the councilman told the audience that Vicente Fernandez's legacy "continues to resonate in the hearts of millions of people and has inspired many around the world, making all Latinos proud." 

Kevin de Leon also said that many people wonder who Vicente is, to which he invites them to think about Frank Sinatra and what he meant to millions of Americans. 

"Through his music, he has etched his place in history in the hearts of fans who will cherish him forever," the councilman said, according to Fox LA.

De León's proposal to rename the street after Fernández was opposed by David Silvas, vice president of the Boyle Heights Neighborhood Council and chairman of its Planning and Land Use Committee.

Vicente Fernández received several awards during his musical career, including four Grammy and nine Latin Grammy awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, 14 Lo Nuestro awards and the Orden Libertadores de Venezuela in 2012.
