La Cuna del Dembow tells the story of this musical genre born in the Dominican Republic and its influence on Dominican urban culture, featuring the testimonies of artists who experienced its rise. Among them are Bad Bunny, who has the first Latin Grammy nominated dembow song, “Tití Me Preguntó,” Chimbala, Pablo Piddy, Yailin la Más Viral, La Insuperable, La Materialista, Farruko, Kiko El Crazy, Santiago Matías, Rochy RD, Bulin 47, Bulova, Lírico, and Yomel El Meloso, among others.

“I remember when I’d hear commentary such as, ‘Dembow will never go global until Dominicans change their slang, because nobody understands them,’ and in the end, I think that’s precisely what’s delivering the best results at a global level,” said Bad Bunny. “Dominicans are taking their culture, their jargon, their codes to the whole world and that is what attracts attention. That is what you want to know and you want to be a part of,” added the Puerto Rican star.

In its second part, the documentary produced by veteran director and producer Jessy Terrero seeks to show the evolution of the Dembow movement, its globalization, and the discrimination it has faced from humble beginnings. It also lays out the formula from the beats and types of Dembow, the inspiration behind the lyrics, and a tribute to women making their way in a male-dominated space.

Part two of the production will double as an introduction and class for new fans of this musical style and longtime fans as well with unique advice from the leaders of this movement.

“New talent just has to enjoy the process, not get stressed about it. When you’re making a Dembow you live it and love it, and that way people who listen to it will also love it, too,” said Dominican artist Kiko El Crazy.

“I would say to never abandon the essence of what a Dembow is, their essence as a person, the essence of where they come from, and their culture, and while keeping this in mind, to also find how to elevate and bring something new to the table, something that is uniquely theirs,” Bad Bunny added. 

The documentary, which is available on Amazon Music and Prime Video, is part of Amazon Music's EL GÉNERO, a content hub that has a catalog of new music, programming and editorial content that highlights the globalization of urban music.

La Cuna del Dembow is accompanied by the playlist "Bajo Mundo," which  features some of the top Dembow hits from artists like El Alfa, Tokischa, and Chimbala.
