Michael LaRosa, FLOTUS’ Press Secretary, announced this morning that he would be stepping down from his role in the White House and all duties related to his responsibility as special assistant to POTUS. 

“For a kid from Easton, Pennsylvania, who only ever dreamed of stepping foot into this history-rich residence for a tour, working for @FLOTUS in the White House has been the proudest and most rewarding experience of my life,” LaRosa wrote on Twitter following the announcement in the media. 

In a statement to CNN, White House officials confirmed that LaRosa’s departure was known for weeks but delayed his exit in light of a few high-profile foreign trips he’d take with Dr. Jill Biden. 

LaRosa joined the Biden campaign in 2019 as Biden’s spokesperson, and in 2021, he was promoted to Press Secretary. That same year in September, the White House granted him the title of special assistant to the president. 

Notable staff departures

LaRosa’s announcement follows a series of senior White House Communications staff departures, most notably Jen Psaki, who stepped down as the White House Press Secretary in May of 2022. 

Psaki assumed the role of Press Secretary following a turbulent election contested by Donald Trump and other senior public officials at Capitol Hill. According to Politico, the White House expected Psaki’s departure for months, and in an interview on CNN’s The Axe Files, she hinted at her exit.

“I think it’s going to be time for somebody else to have this job, in a year from now or about a year from now,” she said.

In December of 2021, Symone Sanders, Kamala Harris’ senior advisor, and chief spokesperson stepped down from her role, a move that was also expected within the White House. 

Just weeks later, Ashley Etienne, Harris’ Comms Director, also resigned.
