"This Sept. 7 should be a day of love and union for Brazil," but "unhappily that is not what is happening," former Brazilian President and current presidential candidate Lula da Silva wrote across his social networks, also referencing to the "hate" speech attributed to current president Jair Bolsonaro who is seeking re-election.

"I have faith that Brazil will reconquer its flag, its sovereignty and democracy," added the former Brazilian president.

According to the latest polls ahead of the elections, Lula maintains 44% support, against 31% of the far-right leader.

For his part, Bolsonaro took advantage of the independence celebrations on Wednesday to give a boost to his campaign with various acts of patriotic tone.

The president was welcomed by an audience of some 40,000 people at his own celebration.

Bolsonaro planned a political demonstration in the Esplanade of the Ministries, and then will move to Rio de Janeiro, where he will hold an electoral rally in front of thousands of supporters.
